At the same time, two commercially exploitable quantities of coal have been identified in Kenya at
1. Mui Basin – Kitui & Mwingi districts
2. Taru Basin – Kwale and Kilifi districts
These will be exploited to provide a new and cheaper source of energy in the country.

In addition to the above power sources, the government is using solar, especially in Arid And Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) districts though the Solar Electricity Programme.
